William "Mongoose" Reeves began his life on Jalan, Fourth planet in the Elysium system, former homeworld of the Tevarin.
William served in the Navy like his parents before him, but as a fighter pilot. He "earned" his callsign during his first combat mission where he panicked flying erratically in an asteroid field where they were ambushed. He miraculously managed to evade getting hit even once, avoided collision with asteroids, and kept the attention of their two attackers while his wingmen dispatched the attacking pirates. The other pilots joked that he looked like a mongoose jumping around like a loon, and the name stuck.
He later gained his footing as a competent pilot and especially excelled at group maneuvers and coordination. It was this competency which led to his promotion as a flight leader in the 176th "Valkyrie" squadron.
