Coming from a long line of UEE servicemen, Thatch was no different in his younger years. Starting his career as a Space Marine, Robert realized his dream of becoming a pilot when a routine patrol and subsequent search of an unmarked pirate vessel went wrong. Thatch was responsible for saving the lives of several UEE crewmen, as he piloted the UEE ship to safety when the designated pilot was mortally wounded in the skirmish.
This dream was short lived however, as he was assigned to pilot a Retaliator back to find the pirate vessel. The UEE leadership did not want to take responsibility for the "less than great" look of nuking the Carrack from a distance without opportunity to surrender, and Thatch was dishonorably discharged after a brief trial.
A pariah of his home system of Terra, Thatch now does contract work for organizations who can utilize his skill set and distaste for the UEE that framed him. Specializing in "logistics", if you need high tech gear or somebody disappeared, Thatch is your man.
