Just as the Viking Osebergs once travelled throughout the ancient world exploring new lands, raiding the English coast, trading across Africa, serving as Sultans bodyguards in the Middle East, and even owning land in Russia, so to does VEGVISIR take advantage of the world we live in.

History

The history of VEGVISIR dates back to the early days of humanity’s venture into the unknown. The word “Vegvisir” in Old Norse means “guidepost” or “wayfinder,” reflecting its primary function in guiding and protecting those who dared to explore uncharted territories. The Vegvisir was an iconic Norse symbol, often depicted as a magical compass-like sign that offered a sense of direction and security to its bearers, helping them navigate the stormy seas and unknown lands. Just as the Vegvisir was a beacon of hope in times of adversity, VEGVISIR carries on this legacy by providing safety and security throughout the depths of space. VEGVISIR is not just a collection of like-minded individuals, but a tight-knit community that are dependent on each other and communally focused. Just as Viking longships once sailed across the vast oceans with soldiers at the rows, everyone shares the burden of responsibility in equal measure.

Manifesto

Organization Vision:
Bureaucracy in an online gaming community… Nah thanks, I’m good. Arbitrary promotions, mandatory activity, obligatory events… there’s plenty of other places for that. At VEGVISIR, we have stripped down the idea of a rank structure as minimal as can be done while still having concise decision making and protection of communal assets. The idea is that the game is supposed to be fun to play, and playing with others is supposed to open up new/unique gameplay options (especially true in Star Citizen). We have already created a foundation that centers on the idea of no obligations with a jump in and have fun style of play. VEGVISIR sole aim is to provide the advantages of multicrew gameplay and group events without the individual costs that have become commonplace.

Positions:
Thralls
Upon joining, everyone is given the title of Thrall. As a Thrall you have nearly complete access to the organization, events, and our collective decisions. Want to learn something new or have something new to teach others? Organize some training. Want to run an event or do a specific activity? Organize an event. There are no restrictions on Thralls’ ability to engage with the organization and participate in group activities.

Karls
-The title of Karl is given to those who have demonstrated a level of commitment and earned trust. To become a Karl, you must be nominated by another Karl and then the decision is put to a poll. Not everyone plays at the same time with the same people and inclusion as a Karl is dependent on the organization, as a whole, having collective (or vouched for) confidence that you can be trusted with more access to organizational efforts i.e. outpost resource access, organization ships, etc.
-Huskarl – A secondary title within the Karl ranks that serve as advisors and confidants to the Division Jarls. While Karls may have access to organization assets, a Huskarl will manage them.

Jarls
-Jarls serve as the senior point of contact within each division. Their sole responsibility is to be the voice of each division and help provide clear guidance and decision-making to each of the different aspects of the organization.

Charter

Management Approach
Discord polls and community discussions run the organization, not an individual; everything that can be a diplomatic process will be. While executive/time sensitive decisions depend on the council of Jarls, nearly every other aspect of organization decision making can (and should be) done with the community in mind. There is no world in which everyone will be happy, but relying on a utilitarian approach, one that serves the most good for the most people, is a core principle of the culture VEGVISIR strives for and maintains.
If there are any interpersonal issues, there’s no chain of command to discuss it with… work it out on your own. If the problem spills over and begins to affect other people, then a quick discussion will present an agreed upon solution and we can all move on. At the end of the day, managing an online community shouldn’t be running a daycare. If you can’t take care of yourself and your problems, then there are other plenty of other organizations with a more rigid rank structure that will make sure to hold you accountable for your actions. When VEGVISIR logs into the verse, it’s to play and enjoy the game of Star Citizen without the invented responsibilities and added stressors of community management.

Roles and Divisions
Roles are individually assigned and represent intentions. If you assign yourself the role of crew, you are advertising yourself as a crew member for the larger ships. Medic – you’ll provide medical coverage. Pilot – you’re flying. If there is a gameplay loop that you wish to focus on and the role doesn’t exist, then one can be created to accommodate your playstyle and contributions to the group. As most of our daily gameplay revolves around spontaneous gameplay or daily interests, roles will only be relevant when running events as it will help assign individuals to event requirements.

Divisions, on the other hand, represent organizational structure within VEGVISIR. As with roles, divisions are self-assigned positions that VEGVISIR members occupy, assuming the in-game responsibilities of the respective gameplay loop. While they are not restrictive of what you can do on a day-to-day basis, they do serve as a from of personnel management, ensuring that organizational requirements are distributed across the membership. Each of the subdivisions are led by a Jarl.
