History
[LINEAGE]
The ‘Heavy 88’ was formed in the latter part of the 28th century by the UEE in direct response to the both the Vanduul and Xi’An threats. The Vanduul had already shaken the UEE at both the Battle of Orion and assault on Boro. Although there had been no open conflict, tensions with the Xi’an were at an all-time high. A need was identified for a Heavy Assault, drop-capable Marine Expeditionary Unit [MEU], the 88th UEE Navy Squadron was chosen to be augmented.
The Heavy 88 spent the next 100 years achieving notoriety at Garon, during the civil war on Charron III, culminating at the Fall of Caliban in the later half of the 29th century.
With most of the 88th squadron destroyed, the Legatus Navium elected to retire the unit instead of refitting. In 2874, Marines of the Heavy 88 were offered retirement or simply released from their contracts. All ships and equipment were send to Crusader Industries for disposition, likely to be scrapped.
Recently retired, the executive officer of the NATSU gathered his staff at Crusader. Seeing an opportunity, they pooled their considerable resources and took a leap of faith. The UEE was caught off guard when the entire compliment of the regiment was purchased outright, the envelope for the offer simply read “88TH MARINES.”

Manifesto
[THE BLOOD HELM]
In early 2795, the governate of Charon III renounced recognition from the UEE declaring independence. As fighting escalated, the UEE Navy dispatched a detachment of the Heavy 88 (1st Marine Regiment) to evacuate 1,000 or so UEE civilians from the consulate compound. The marines quickly found themselves outnumbered and under fire. An un-named Gunnery Sergeant is credited with holding the bunker main corridor for nearly 24 hours while a rescue ship was dispatched. Eyewitness accounts recall this marine removing his helmet and placing it on the ground when an optical pickup failed.
As the relief force entered, they encountered a corridor littered with bodies and near ankle deep blood. The ranking officer’s report noted that he was greeted by the single marine in full armor, who’s helmet was completely red. The surviving marine was quoted as saying “I was just taking care of business”.
The Heavy 88 honor this marine with the Blood Helm tradition.

The Heavy 88 (1st Marine Regiment) distinguished itself in Battle during the Fall of Caliban in 2871; the same battle that decimated the The 88th Squadron. UEE command charged the 1st Regiment Captain with blocking force duties, covering for the light carriers while they retreated. The Marine Commander, refusing to give way and heavily outgunned, ordered his corvettes to ram the Vanduul Kingship one at a time. Only a single Marine Corvette, the NATSU, acting as fleet medivac, survived to make the final jump.
Spectrum coverage of the battle was broadcast by the UEE as a symbol of courage. The Imperator himself, commented that, “They gave no warnings… without panic or fear they charged into the Vanduul , as the hammer strikes the anvil or as a Rhino charges.”
