Forgotten by the UEE after the fall of the Orion system, the Remnant has survived only by strong bonds to each other, faithfulness to allies, and independence from everyone else.



History

02-16-2712: The Orion System falls to the Vanduul invaders. The UEE calls for immediate evacuation and retreat.

02-19-2712: An industrial ship returns from an expedition to find the capital city of Armitage in complete ruins, indeed the entire planet has been leveled by antimatter bombs. The ship has been out of comms range for two months. All attempts to contact the UEE fail, and only a handful of survivors are found in the ruins, who piece together the story of the brief and brutal invasion.

After three days of picking through the ruins, the ship, its crew, and the survivors attempt to follow the UEE to the Tiber system. The UEE, on high alert, has blockaded the jump point and refuses to allow anyone through—even these desperate refugees. After a week of attempting to convince the military to let them through, the survivors return to the ruins of Armitage, disillusioned with their UEE rulers.

Unable to return to protected space by ordinary means, these survivors make the desperate choice to refit their ship for what they know will be a long and difficult journey through dangerous and unfamiliar systems. With their ship—now re-dubbed the “ORS-Rivers of Babylon”—and a scrappy flotilla of refitted ships found in the ruins, the forefathers of Orion’s Remnant discover an uncharted jump point and venture forward through uncharted Vanduul space.

Little do they know that this is the beginning of a journey back to civilization that will take them nearly a century, from which they will emerge changed, hardened, and utterly loyal to the principles that helped them survive:

Decimation for enemies
Mercy for the weak
Justice for the strong
Honor at all costs

After their many trials and tribulations, Orion’s Remnant has continued as a nomadic and opportunist community up to the present day. Currently operating in the Stanton system, they survive as a separatist syndicate, obeying the law to the extent they find it just, and skirting it to the extent it is necessary for survival. Little is known of their internal workings, which are veiled under strict secrecy and an honor code to rival any criminal organization. Their loyalty is not easily given, but once given is unbreakable except by treachery—upon which their vendetta is equally persistent. Despite their mistrust of the UEE, they appear to view most criminal organizations with disdain, as inherently chaotic elements, and have been known to conduct highly effective covert bounty-hunting operations. Publicly, they participate in various trade and industrial ventures throughout Stanton and Pyro, while their secrecy inspires many rumors of underground gambling rings and smuggling operations.

Anyone can “join” Orion’s Remnant—indeed, they employ the services of numerous freelancers, contractors, nomads and outlaws alike in their growing economic ventures, from industrial salvage operations and investment banking to (legally unsubstantiated) rumors of gambling rings and paramilitary operations. But to be “made” in the Remnant is another matter, and neither money nor power can give one access to the inner circle.

Instead, the Remnant chooses you. Having first proven yourself useful, you must then prove yourself trustworthy and, to use a rather unfamiliar word for the 30th century, you must be “genteel.” From the very sparse accounts of Remnant culture among each other, there is a remarkable emphasis on civility and good nature, and coarse or erratic behavior is a quick route to ostracization, or worse. Even centuries after the Remnant escaped Vanduul space, they still hold fiercely to the principles of mutual trust, loyalty, and hard work that got them through their exodus.

If one shows himself consistently to be not only a valuable asset, but a good compatriot, then an individual may be invited to join the Remnant as a made man, though details on this process are few and far between. Needless to say, anyone who has joined successfully has valued the Remnant’s trust highly enough to keep their secrets hidden. Only time will tell how well Orion’s Remnant will grow in Stanton’s competitive environment, and beyond—will you be chosen to join them?

“You have been weighed and found wanting.” ~This is the only line successfully transmitted from a failed attempt to infiltrate Orion’s Remnant in 2950.

1. Be loyal to members of the organization. Do not interfere with each other’s interests, and never discuss Remnant business with outsiders.

2. Be rational. Be a member of the team. Don’t engage in a battle you cannot win. This applies to organization business and personal business.

3. Be a man of honor. Show respect to women, your elders, and your superiors. Don’t rock the boat.

4. Be a stand-up guy. Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. Don’t sell out for the sake of your ego. A stand-up guy shows courage and heart. He does not whine or complain in the face of adversity, including punishment and fair critcism. If you can’t pay, don’t play.

5. Have class. Be independent. Know your way around the world.
