History

DHL Express is a global logistics and express delivery company headquartered in Bonn, Germany. It was founded in 1969 by Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom, and Robert Lynn. The company’s name is derived from the initials of the founders’ last names.

The founders began by transporting documents by air between San Francisco and Honolulu using a small aircraft. They soon realized the potential for a larger-scale express delivery service and expanded their operations to other locations in Hawaii and beyond.

In 1971, DHL began its international expansion with the launch of a service between San Francisco and Hong Kong. This was followed by the establishment of operations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, DHL continued to expand its global network and develop innovative delivery solutions, such as same-day delivery and customs clearance services. The company also became the first international express delivery company to enter the Chinese market in 1986.

In the 1990s, DHL underwent significant changes, including the acquisition of Airborne Express, which expanded the company’s presence in North America. DHL also introduced new technologies and services, such as online tracking and signature capture, to enhance the customer experience.

In the 2000s, DHL focused on further expanding its global network and improving operational efficiency. This included the introduction of the company’s first green logistics program, GoGreen, in 2007.

Today, DHL Express operates in over 220 countries and territories, delivering millions of packages every day. The company continues to innovate and adapt to meet the changing needs of customers and the global marketplace.
