There is a well-established trope in computer games that, no matter how instrumental you've been in saving the known galaxy, NPCs are notorious for treating you like every other shifty-eyed bastard that crosses their doorstep. Wouldn't it be nice for once to kick that trend and actually take advantage of your hard-earned rep to grease the wheels from time to time?

Example: Customs/militia want to board and inspect your ship for contraband. "Is this really necessary, officer? I'm on good terms with your boss, after all."

Example: You've been put at the end of a long waiting list for a free landing pad. "Come on, I do business here all the time. Bump me up the queue, I'll be in and out before you know it."

Example: You're being turned back by a Navy checkpoint. "Are you serious? I'm a hero of the Vega Resistance. If you can't trust me, who can you trust?"

This could work as an extension of my proposed deeper rep system from a while back. Link, if anyone's interested:

I am pretty sure being able to use your rep like that as leverage is already planned.
What's the deal with starline food?

I'm not saying that this exact situation inspired this idea, but I'm not not saying it either.

    Indirectly relevant -

Will NPCs duck and dive, or run for cover when they see a player pull out a pistol / rifle etc… (prior to fighting) in various landing zones or city zones?
Yeah, we're definitely going to have a realistic AI behaviour that includes, if you're in a crowded law-abiding area and you pull out a gun, some NPCs will run away, police will probably pull out their guns and tell you to drop your weapon, that's part of the whole NPC AI plan. Hopefully we'll get them to feel real and alive.

also bribes (both asked for by and paid by NPCs) possible:

which would probably be based on your standing/rep to determine whether they'd be accepted or get you turned over to the authorities.

    Speculation, of course.
In all the wide 'verse, there's none like me.
